Landmarks in the historical development of fluorescein angiography.

چکیده
In 1961 two medical students from Indiana, H.R. Novotny and D.L. Alvis, authored a paper which described retinal angiography techniques still in use today. 1 The utilization of a fundus camera equipped with an exciter filter, barrier filter, and electronic flash to sequentially document the retinal blood flow following a sodium fluorescein injection was outlined in their landmark article. The complete story behind the implementation of this procedure began many years prior to this seminal report, however. The fluorescein angiography procedure is a culmination of the evolution of retinal imaging intersecting with the application of sodium fluorescein to ophthalmology. This paper reviews published landmarks in the historical development of fluorescein angiography by examining the evolution of retinal photography, the historical use of dyes to view the retina, and important work contemporaneous with Novotny and Alvis. It traces the history of the fluorescein angiography procedure through selected quotes from the publications of significant contributors. A list of resources is included. The reader is encouraged to further explore the historical record. Beginnings

Early Detection of Diabetic Retinopathy in Fluorescent Angiography Retinal Images Using Image Processing Methods
Introduction: Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is the single largest cause of sight loss and blindness in the working age population of Western countries; it is the most common cause of blindness in adults between 20 and 60 years of age. Early diagnosis of DR is critical for preventing vision loss so early detection of microaneurysms (MAs) as the first signs of DR is important. This paper addresses th...
متن کاملMultimodal Registration of Retinal Images Using Domain-Specific Landmarks and Vessel Enhancement
The analysis of different image modalities is frequently performed in ophthalmology as they provide complementary information for the diagnosis and follow-up of relevant diseases, like hypertension or diabetes. This work presents an hybrid method for the multimodal registration of color fundus retinography and fluorescein angiography. The proposed method combines a feature-based approach, using...
متن کامل[Simultaneous ICG- and fluorescein-angiography for fundus examination].
BACKGROUND An indocyanine-green (ICG) angiography is rarely used as the only diagnostic procedure. Almost always it is performed additionally to a fluorescein angiography. The use of simultaneous ICG and fluorescein (SIF) angiography therefore makes sense. Several examples for the application of SIF-angiography are presented. MATERIALS AND METHODS SIF-angiography was performed using a 2-wavel...
متن کاملSimultaneous indocyanine green and fluorescein angiography.
PURPOSE To facilitate the interpretation of the choroidal dye filling sequence, the use of simultaneous indocyanine green (ICG) and fluorescein angiography was evaluated. METHODS A single-wavelength scanning laser ophthalmoscope (SLO) was modified to a two-wavelength system, permitting the simultaneous recording of ICG and fluorescein angiography. This method has been used in 340 cases. About...
متن کاملIndocyanine green angiographic findings of lacquer cracks in pathologic myopia.
Lacquer cracks are thought to represent healed mechanical breaks in the retinal pigment epithelium, Bruch's membrane, and choriocapillaris complex. In this study, we analyzed the indocyanine green (ICG) angiographic features of lacquer cracks and compared them with findings using fluorescein angiography. Complete ophthalmologic examinations, fluorescein angiography, and ICG angiography were per...
